Ion/electron-beam parametric amplifiers
Recent experiments with positive-ion beams suggest that an ion?electron beam, consisting of an electron beam superimposed on an ion beam, such that the two beams have different drift velocities, is realisable. A five-frequency parametric amplifier using an ion?electron beam is proposed.

Fibre Brillouin amplifier with electronically controlled bandwidth
A novel technique for controlling the bandwidth of a fibre Brillouin amplifier is proposed and demonstrated. By using a frequency-modulated pump laser, in this case an external-cavity semiconductor laser, we have increased the bandwidth of useful gain by more than one order of magnitude.

Investigation into intermodulation distortion in HEMTs using a quasi-2-D physical model [PDF]
The need for both linear and efficient pseudomorphic high electron-mobility transistors (pHEMTs) for modern wireless handsets necessitates a thorough understanding of the origins of intermodulation distortion at the device level.

The dielectric properties of clays are studied on the level of individual monolayers and functional double stacks. The material breakdown characteristics and charge storage performance are analyzed. For illustration, a defined charge pattern representing a cuneiform character is produced, written into a microscopic clay tile, referencing the origins of

Substrate Stress Relaxation Regulates Cell‐Mediated Assembly of Extracellular Matrix
Silicone‐based viscoelastic substrates with tunable stress relaxation reveal how matrix mechanics regulates cellular mechanosensing and cell‐mediated matrix remodelling in the stiff regime. High stress relaxation promotes assembly of fibronectin fibril‐like structures, increased nuclear localization of YAP and formation of β1 integrin‐enriched ...

Bloodstream infections (BSI) are one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in both civilian and military populations. This paper summarizes recent progress in novel treatment strategies to manage BSI arising from both bacterial and fungal pathogens using molecules, particles, and materials to elicit host‐directed immunity.

Nutation damping of dynamically tuned gyroscopes
The paper deals with the problem of nutation damping of dynamically tuned gyroscopes (DTG). Unlike the common two-axis gyroscopes, the DTG damping torques caused by dry and viscous frictions are absent in gimbal bearings, while those due to the rotor ...
