Amplifying on the PCR Amplifier

2010
Kary Mullis is not a theorist, but is a chemist who won the 1993 Nobel Prize for inventing the PCR method—which is an amplifier for DNA. He is also an alumnus of Georgia Tech, where I am these days. Mullis is famous, perhaps our most famous graduate, but he does have a quirky personality. Perhaps to create a brilliant idea like PCR took such a thinker.

Amplified spontaneous emission in a Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier

Applied Optics, 2003
Amplified spontaneous emission power and contrast ratio in a linear miltipass Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier with a wavelength centered at 1054 nm are calculated and measured. It is shown that the passive losses of a seed pulse and the losses in coupling to the regenerative amplifier cavity mode degrade the intensity contrast ratio to 10(-6)-10(-7).

Amplifiers and Oscillators

1983
The last two chapters showed how transistors—bipolar and FET—work as amplifying devices, using a small current or voltage to control a much larger current. The application to a machine like a record-player, for example, is an obvious one, for the small electric signal produced by the player’s pick-up cartridge must be amplified to a sufficiently large ...

Operation amplifier

To provide an operation amplifier which improves power source voltage removal ratios while assuring phase compensation characteristics, and therefore can be realized with a small-scale circuit and low power consumption. SOLUTION: The operation amplifier comprises: a differential amplifier circuit 1; an output amplifier circuit 2 connected in series to ...

The Audion-Detector and Amplifier

Proceedings of the IRE, 1914
Notwithstanding the now wide-spread use of the Audion as a detector in radio telegraph and telephone service few accounts of independent research into the nature of this instrument, or even cursory descriptions of its operation, seem to have been recorded, since the original paper presented before the American Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1906.
