Wedge resection of amputation stumps. A valuable salvage procedure

open access: yes, 1987
We describe the technique of wedge resection for revision of an amputation stump, and report the results of this at below-knee level in 57 patients with peripheral vascular disease; healing occurred in 42 of these (74%).

Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces Effectively Prevent Neuroma Formation After Sciatic Nerve Transection in Rats

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2022
ObjectiveThe disordered growth of nerve stumps after amputation leading to the formation of neuromas is an important cause of postoperative pain in amputees. This severely affects the patients' quality of life.

Sentience in cephalopod molluscs: an updated assessment

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1311-1333, June 2026.
ABSTRACT This article evaluates the evidence for sentience – the capacity to have feelings – in cephalopod molluscs: octopus, cuttlefish, squid, and nautilus. Our framework includes eight criteria, covering both whether the animal's nervous system could support sentience and whether their behaviour indicates sentience.

Neonatal Wet Gangrene With Early Auto‐Amputation in a Resource‐Limited Setting With Incomplete Etiologic Workup: A Case Report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Neonatal limb gangrene with auto‐amputation is rare and often idiopathic. Early recognition, prompt referral, and thorough etiologic workup—despite resource limitations—are critical. Wet gangrene requires broad‐spectrum antibiotics, wound care, and timely surgical amputation to preserve growth plates and allow future prosthesis fitting.

AMPUTATION ABOVE OR BELOW THE KNEE FOR PRIMARY PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE

open access: yes, 1950
1. An attempt has been made to rationalise the selection of the site of amputation for gangrene in primary peripheral vascular disease. 2. There is a good chance of the survival of a below-knee stump if the circulation in the skin of the proposed flaps

Development and Validation of an Algorithm to Objectively Quantify Adherence to Offloading Interventions

open access: yesJournal of Foot and Ankle Research, Volume 19, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Diabetic foot ulcers require offloading for healing. However, adherence with removable offloading devices is often poor. Prior objective measures of adherence yielded important behavioral insights, despite substantial methodological limitations.
