Knock‐knock, who is inside? Exploiting citizen science data to shed light on Aedes albopictus indoor presence in southern Europe

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Animal behaviour in human‐dominated landscapes is difficult to study at large spatial and temporal scales, especially for small species characterised by elusive movements. Citizen science can help overcome these limitations by turning routine human–animal encounters into observations of where and when species are active.

High‐Resolution Satellite Imagery Reveals Landscape‐Scale Benthic Habitat Changes in a Turbid Coral Reef

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
High‐resolution satellite imagery and landscape metrics revealed a 77% decline in coral‐dominated habitats at Abrolhos Bank between 2010 and 2024, accompanied by macroalgal and zoanthid expansion. Spatial reorganisation indicates increasing fragmentation, homogenisation and loss of reef structural complexity.

Large parameter uncertainty persists in soil food web models integrating stoichiometry, respiration and assimilation

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Soil food web models are essential for linking animal diversity to carbon and nutrient cycling. However, it is unclear how soil animals regulate excess carbon when nutrient availability limits their growth and how to best represent animal respiration in these models. To

Urban ants as potential mechanical vectors of pathogenic and antibiotic‐resistant bacteria in a Brazilian hospital

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
Nine ant taxa were identified in a Brazilian hospital, with Tapinoma melanocephalum and Dorymyrmex brunneus being the most abundant. Eighty‐five percent of collected ants yielded detectable bacterial growth, including clinically relevant genera such as Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli and Pluralibacter.
