Adventures in “belief”: Hearing an old concept in a new key

open access: yesAmerican Anthropologist, Volume 125, Issue 2, Page 322-333, June 2023., 2023
Abstract The well‐worn critique of “belief” as inadequate for understanding ritual motivation and practice has become a truism in need of reevaluation. For groups who foreground the establishment of truth in ritual practice, “belief” is a useful analytic term that brings together propositions and commitment to the relationships and systems articulating

An a priori error analysis of a type III thermoelastic problem with two porosities

open access: yesNumerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations, Volume 39, Issue 2, Page 1067-1084, March 2023., 2023
Abstract In this work, we study, from the numerical point of view, a type III thermoelastic model with double porosity. The thermomechanical problem is written as a linear system composed of hyperbolic partial differential equations for the displacements and the two porosities, and a parabolic partial differential equation for the thermal displacement.

Lizard thermoregulation revisited after two decades of global warming

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 36, Issue 12, Page 3022-3035, December 2022., 2022
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Although the effects of global warming on thermoregulation are usually explored using predictions of climate envelop modelling, such effects should best be analysed empirically, studying the same population with the same methods after a long enough period of temperature

Miniature temperature data loggers increase precision and reduce bias when estimating the daily survival rate for bird nests

open access: yesJournal of Field Ornithology, Volume 92, Issue 4, Page 492-505, December 2021., 2021
ABSTRACT Demographic studies of many bird species are challenging because their nests are cryptic, resulting in few nests being found. To maximize statistical power, methods are needed that minimize disturbance while yielding as much information per nest as possible. One way to meet these objectives is to use miniature thermal data loggers to precisely

Dysregulation of the actin scavenging system and inhibition of DNase activity following severe thermal injury

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 4, Page 391-401, March 2020., 2020
Circulating cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) is not found in healthy subjects but is readily detected after thermal injury and may contribute to the risk of multiple organ failure. The authors hypothesized that a postburn reduction in DNase protein/enzyme activity could contribute to the increase in cfDNA after thermal injury.

Stability of Oligosaccharides Derived from Lactose and Lactulose regarding Rheological and Thermal Properties

open access: yesJournal of Food Quality, Volume 2018, Issue 1, 2018., 2018
Prebiotic carbohydrates derived from lactulose (OsLu) are appealing ingredients that provide beneficial effects following their fermentation by the gut microbiota; however, more investigation is needed to evaluate their technological properties and applicability as a functional food ingredient in the market.
