Glutamine and glutamate transport by Anabaena variabilis [PDF]
Anabaena variabilis, a dinitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium, has high- and low-affinity systems for the transport of glutamine and glutamate. The high-affinity systems have Km values of 13.8 and 100 microM and maximal rates of 13.2 and 14.4 nmol X min-1 X mg of chlorophyll a-1 for glutamine and glutamate, respectively.

The TonB-dependent transport of scarcely available substrates across the outer membrane is a conserved feature in Gram-negative bacteria. The plasma membrane-embedded TonB-ExbB-ExbD accomplishes complex functions as an energy transducer by physically ...

Abstract Interactions between aquatic organisms and contaminants in under‐ice lake environments are poorly characterized relative to ice‐free seasons. Here, we compared under‐ice arsenic biogeochemical processes and plankton community composition in four subarctic lakes spanning an arsenic contamination gradient.

Ferredoxin‐dependent flavin thioredoxin reductases (FFTRs) regenerate reduced thioredoxin, sustaining dithiol–disulfide exchange reactions that regulate protein activity in select organisms. In cyanobacterial FFTRs, we describe the formation of a thiolate–flavin charge transfer complex, asynchronous reduction of the two FAD cofactors within the ...

ABSTRACT We evaluated whether riparian forest restoration could mitigate the impacts of agricultural land use on key stream ecosystem processes (total and microbial leaf litter decomposition and periphytic algal biomass accrual) and associated assemblages (invertebrates, aquatic hyphomycetes, and periphytic algae) in three streams located in northern ...

The Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 Exoproteome: Taking a Peek outside the Box
The interest in examining the subset of proteins present in the extracellular milieu, the exoproteome, has been growing due to novel insights highlighting their role on extracellular matrix organization and biofilm formation, but also on homeostasis and ...

ABSTRACT Epilithic biofilms along a latitudinal gradient of Arctic/alpine lakes and streams were analysed for their composition of algae (incl. cyanobacteria) and meiofaunal assemblages and correlated these with environmental variables. The composition of algal, meiofauna and nematode assemblages differed between lakes and streams.
