Microbial iron reduction under oxic conditions: implications for subsurface biogeochemistry [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Iron (Fe) reduction is one of Earth's most ancient microbial metabolisms, but after atmosphere-ocean oxygenation, this anaerobic process was relegated to niche anoxic environments below the water and soil surface. However, new technologies to monitor redox processes at the microscale relevant to microbial cells have recently revealed that the oxygen ...

An Alternate to Accumulated Oxygen Deficit (AOD) for Measuring Anaerobic Contribution: ‘AODalt’ is Valid in Normoxia and Hypoxia [PDF]

open access: yes
Accumulated oxygen deficit (AOD) is the gold standard measure of anaerobic contribution; however, its calculation requires several contentious assumptions and it is time-consuming, requiring participants to perform a number of submaximal exercise bouts ...

A Peptide‐Derived Aggregation‐Induced Emission Nanobioprobe: Unlocking Selective Detection of Fusobacterium nucleatum and Noninvasive Screening of Colorectal Cancer

open access: yesAggregate, EarlyView.
An F. nucleatum‐specific recognition strategy is proposed for CRC screening and diagnosis by conjugating a red/near‐infrared (NIR) emissive aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) luminogen with a FadA‐targeting peptide. The prepared nanobioprobes, designated AIE‐Pep NPs, display selective adhesion to F. nucleatum, accompanied by bright red/NIR fluorescence,

A Sequential Release Micro‐nano System for Colitis Therapy via Gut Microbiota and Immune Regulation

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
The micro‐nano system achieves the sequential release of drugs in response to gut microbiota and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Inulin prebiotics restore gut microbiota balance. Selenium compounds scavenge ROS and promote macrophage polarization, while 3‐oxolithocholic acid suppresses TH17‐cell differentiation. As a multifactorial therapeutic approach,

Analysis of anaerobic digestion model with two serial interconnected chemostats [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
In this paper, we study a well known two-step anaerobic digestion model in a configuration of two chemostats in series. This model is an eight-dimensional system of ordinary differential equations. Since the reaction system has a cascade structure, we show that the eight-order model can be reduced to a four-dimensional one.

The influence of physical exercise on alterations in concentrations of neuropeptide Y, leptin and other selected hormonal and metabolic parameters in sportspeople [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The aim of this study was to evaluate the behaviour and relationships between hormones, and metabolic blood parameters essential for energetic balance control during rest, exercise and restitution.

An argument for using anaerobes as microbial cell factories to advance synthetic biology and biomanufacturing

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Anaerobes thrive in the absence of oxygen and are an untapped reservoir of biotechnological potential. Therefore, bioprospecting efforts focused on anaerobic microbial diversity could rapidly uncover new enzymes, pathways, and chassis organisms to drive biotechnology innovation.

Abnormal response of left ventricular systolic function to submaximal exercise in post-partial left ventriculotomy patients

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2007
Patients with heart failure who have undergone partial left ventriculotomy improve resting left ventricular systolic function, but have limited functional capacity. We studied systolic and diastolic left ventricular function at rest and during submaximal
