Pain is a symptom of many human diseases and different analgesics are routinely used to relieve the pain. Traditional pain therapies rely on drugs long-known to have analgesic properties such as nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors, opioid analgesics, and analgesic adjuvants, which include several classes of ...

Aspirin and many other analgesics may be hazardous for some patients with asthma. These patients, numbering approximately 10% to 15% of all asthmatics, have a clinical course that has been well characterized. The diagnosis is usually made from the history, but sometimes it requires analgesic challenge tests. The pathogenesis remains controversial.

The aim of the study is to investigate whether elderly patients on long-term weak opioid analgesics could suffer the problems of tolerance and dependence. The prevalence of potential dependence amongst long-term users was assessed by a semi-structured questionnaire applying the Diagnostic Criteria for Research (DCR-10) criteria for Dependence Syndrome.

Summary: A review of 63 patients with analgesic abuse, analgesic nephropathy and peptic ulcer is presented. It is suggested that the term “Analgesic Syndrome” be reserved for this combination which is often associated with hyper‐tension, ischaemic heart disease, hypo‐chromic anaemia and psycho‐social disability.

A growing body of evidence indicates that glutathione (GSH) plays a vitally important role in cellular function. It detoxifies toxic metabolites of drugs and reactive oxygen species and regulates gene expression, apoptosis, and transmembrane transport of organic solutes.
