The influence of intense chemical pollution on the community composition, diversity and abundance of anammox bacteria in the Jiaojiang Estuary (China). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Continuous chemical pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems in the Jiaojiang Estuary of the East Sea (China). This chemical pollution has significantly changed the estuarine environmental conditions and may have profoundly influenced ...

Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation in Acidic Red Soils

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has been proven to be an important nitrogen removal process in terrestrial ecosystems, particularly paddy soils. However, the contribution of anammox in acidic red soils to nitrogen loss has not been well-documented

Metabolic acclimation of anammox consortia to decreased temperature

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2020
Widespread application of anammox process has been primarily limited to the high sensitivity of anammox consortia to fluctuations of temperature. However, the metabolic acclimation of anammox consortia to decreased temperature remains unclear, which is ...

Effects of antimicrobials in anammox mediated systems: critical review

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2022
Anammox-mediated systems are thought to be cost-effective and efficient technologies for removing nitrogen from wastewater by converting nitrite and ammonium into dinitrogen gas.

Effect of Nitric Oxide on Anammox Bacteria [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 2010
ABSTRACT The effects of nitrogen oxides on anammox bacteria are not well known. Therefore, anammox bacteria were exposed to 3,500 ppm nitric oxide (NO) in the gas phase. The anammox bacteria were not inhibited by the high NO concentration but rather used it to oxidize additional ammonium to dinitrogen gas under conditions relevant to ...

Searching for indigenous anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) bacteria in South African habitats: Pretoria region

open access: yesBiotechnology & Biotechnological Equipment, 2016
In South Africa, the information about the distribution and activity of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) bacteria is very limited and anammox systems have not yet been tested and implemented.

Characterization of a Microbial Community in an Anammox Process Using Stored Anammox Sludge [PDF]

open access: yesWater, 2017
This study investigated a rapid start-up anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process by inoculation with stored Anammox sludge and characterized the associated microbial communities. The Anammox process took only 43 days to start. A high nitrogen removal rate of 1.13 kg N m−3 d−1 and a nitrogen loading rate of 1.28 kg N m−3 d−1 were achieved.

Nitrification and Anammox with Urea as the Energy Source [PDF]

open access: yesSystematic and Applied Microbiology, 2004
Urea is present in many ecosystems and can be used as an energy source by chemolithotrophic aerobic ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Thus the utilization of urea in comparison to ammonia, by AOB as well as anaerobic ammonia oxidizing (Anammox) bacteria was investigated, using enrichments cultures, inoculated with activated sludge, and molecular ...

The anammoxosome: an intracytoplasmic compartment in anammox bacteria [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 2004
Anammox bacteria belong to the phylum Planctomycetes and perform anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox); they oxidize ammonium with nitrite as the electron acceptor to yield dinitrogen gas. The anammox reaction takes place inside the anammoxosome: an intracytoplasmic compartment bounded by a single ladderane lipid-containing membrane.

Serpentine Biocrust Microbes Maintain Nitrogen Cycling Under Drought and Heavy Metal Stress

open access: yesEcological Research, Volume 41, Issue 5, September 2026.
This study highlights the complex interplay between soil geochemistry and moisture availability in shaping microbial communities within wetter and drier serpentine and non‐serpentine biological soil crusts. It demonstrates that both factors influence the structure of nitrogen‐cycling microbial communities and the processes they mediate.
