Dermacentor variabilis were exposed to A marginale as nymphs by feeding on 1 of 4 splenectomized calves during periods of ascending parasitemia (maximum 49% to 81% parasitized erythrocytes) induced by injection of a stabilate.

Gram-Staining Characteristics of Anaplasma marginale

SUMMARY Purified erythrocyte-free suspensions of Anaplasma marginale were stained by Gram's method, Giemsa stain, acridine orange (ao) stain, and fluorescent antibody (fa) stain. Anaplasma marginale was observed to be gram-negative. Morphologic characteristics that were not discernible by the other methods were not detected by Gram's method.

Finite Purification of Anaplasma marginale: Serologic Inactivity of the Anaplasma Body

SUMMARY Anaplasma bodies finitely purified by affinity chromatography to eliminate all traces of erythrocytic stromata were not agglutinated by serum from calves having acute anaplasmosis. The stromata which were associated with the anaplasma bodies were also finitely purified and agglutinated with such serum.

An Anaplasma centrale genomic library was constructed in pUC13. Two clones pAC5 and pAC137 hybridising to A. centrale and A. marginale DNA were isolated from this library. One of these, pAC5, also hybridised to DNA from A. ovis. The total insert of pAC5 was subcloned into pBR322. This subclone, pAC5-12, could detect 1 ng A.

Evaluation of jackrabbits as nonruminant hosts for Anaplasma marginale

SUMMARY Two black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus), 1 splenectomized and 1 intact, were inoculated with 0.2 ml of a 1:5 dilution of a Florida Anaplasma marginale stabilate. Five months later, both hares were inoculated with 1 ml of whole blood from a calf with acute anaplasmosis. Neither hare developed any signs of clinical anaplasmosis.
