Migmatite formation at subsolidus conditions–an alternative to anatexis

Abstract This contribution discusses the formation of stromatic high‐grade migmatites. Volume considerations require that most of the leucosome material is not added from outside the system. A segregation mechanism is necessary except in those cases where the protolith of the migmatite already had a banded structure.

The Cooma Granodiorite, Australia: An example of in situ crustal anatexis?

Data suggesting that the Cooma Granodiorite, New South Wales, Australia, originated by essentially in situ anatexis of adjacent metasedimentary rocks are in apparent conflict with the low-pressure metamorphic environment, unless unrealistically high and localized geothermal gradients (about 55 °C/km) are invoked.

Abstract The mid-Jurassic Marifil and Chon-Aike volcanic rocks of eastern Patagonia are part of one of the largest silicic igneous provinces known. Rb Sr geochronology indicates eruptive ages of 175–190 Ma for the Marifil complex (mostly Toarcian-Aalenian).

Anatexis, Formation of Migmatites, and Origin of Granitic Magmas

In metamorphic terrains, high-grade metamorphic rocks are spatially, and presumably genetically, related to migmatites. Read (1957) describes this general observation as follows: “One of the most firmly established facts in metamorphic geology is the close association in the field of highest-grade metamorphic rocks and migmatites.”
