Shorebird responses to fine‐scale water level fluctuations and macrofauna biomass in a newly constructed freshwater wetland

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 4, May 2026.
Abstract Introduction Restoration of marine and freshwater wetlands for shorebirds is essential for the recovery of their declining populations. An ongoing approach is to restore shorebird habitats by large‐scale engineering, expecting the return of birds once suitable abiotic conditions are (re)established.

Structure of the Wetland‐Dependent Bird Assemblages in the Pequenos Lençóis Maranhenses, in Maranhão, Brazil

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Wetland‐dependent birds play crucial ecological roles and are highly influenced by local environmental factors such as depth, salinity and microhabitat availability. Although the importance of these environments for biodiversity is already recognized, studies on the spatiotemporal dynamics of these assemblages in Maranhão remain scarce.

Sedimentary Metagenomics Reveal Avian Community Transitions From the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
We used sedimentary ancient DNA shotgun metagenomics to reconstruct past bird communities in northern high‐latitude environments. By using long time series and data collected across a large environmental gradient, we contributed in a unique and explorative way to the understanding of palaeoecological dynamics between birds and their habitat on the ...

The genome sequence of the red-crested pochard, Netta rufina (Pallas, 1773) [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]

open access: yesWellcome Open Research
We present a genome assembly from a female specimen of Netta rufina (the red-crested pochard; Chordata; Aves; Anseriformes; Anatidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 1,167.00 megabases.

Comparative Genomics Reveals Genetic Adaptations to Diving‐Associated Foraging in Anseriformes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
We conducted a comparative genomic analysis of 25 Anseriformes species with diverse foraging strategies to uncover the genetic basis of diving adaptation. Diving waterfowl exhibited signatures of positive selection and functional enrichment in metabolic regulation, transmembrane transport, and neural processes essential for hypoxia tolerance.

Response of Anatidae Abundance to Environmental Factors in the Middle and Lower Yangtze River Floodplain, China

open access: yes, 2019
Understanding and predicting animal distribution is one of the most elementary objectives in ecology and conservation biology. Various environmental factors, such as habitat area, habitat quality, and climatic factors, play important roles in shaping ...

Sarcocystis rileyi in UK free-living wildfowl (Anatidae): surveillance, histopathology and first molecular characterisation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background Reports from UK hunters of 'rice grains' in muscles of shot wildfowl (Anatidae) coincided temporally with the finding of sarcocystosis in a number of ducks found as part of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust long-term general surveillance of found ...
