ABSTRACT This article examines the reappearance in the early nineteenth century of anatomical flapbooks in the context of obstetrical education in Britain, America and France. It asks why liftable paper flaps were reintroduced at this time after their disappearance from medical atlases in the eighteenth century.

Deformation fields of skin displacements indicated by vectors in a 22‐year‐old participant (a) and a 65‐year‐old volunteer (b) in different positions. These vectors represent the direction and magnitude of skin displacement at each point on the facial surface.
