The biogeochemistry of anchialine caves: progress and possibilities
Hydrobiologia, 2011Recent investigations of anchialine caves and sinkholes have identified complex food webs dependent on detrital and, in some cases, chemosynthetically produced organic matter. Chemosynthetic microbes in anchialine systems obtain energy from reduced compounds produced during organic matter degradation (e.g., sulfide, ammonium, and methane), similar to ...

Archaeological Potential of the Anchialine Caves in Croatia
Coastal Research Library, 2017Anchialine caves are a common phenomenon in the Mediterranean karst. Their entrances lie above sea level, and underground accumulations of fresh water in their interior float on top of the seawater, which communicates with the sea through porous carbonate rocks.

Anchialine caves are tidal, subterranean, inland habitats with a salinity-stratified water column and exchange of saltwater with the sea. They primarily occur on oceanic islands and some peninsulas with karstic limestone or volcanic terrain and include some of the longest explored caves on Earth.

Anchialine caves of the Krka River estuary, Croatia
2022Anchialine caves have been the subject of increasing research in recent years due to their interesting aquatic environment, which combines the characteristics of a subterranean estuary (stratified water body) and a deep ocean (lack of light and oxygen, chemosynthesis, slow water exchange). In the Republic of Croatia, along the Adriatic coast and on the

Nematode diversity of freshwater and anchialine caves of Western Cuba
Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington, 2018Abstract The diversity and ecology of meiofauna in caves is largely unknown. Therefore, we studied one anchialine and five freshwater caves in November 2014 and January 2016 in western Cuba. We recorded 10 invertebrate taxa with the most abundant being: Nematoda, Ostracoda, Acari and Copepoda.

New cyclopoids (Copepoda) from anchialine caves in Bermuda
Sarsia, 1993Abstract A new species of Speleoithona and two new species of Halicyclops are described from plankton samples taken in anchialine caves in Bermuda. Halicyclops ytororoma, previously known from interstitial intertidal waters along the coast of the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, is also found in these troglobiont samples.

New epacteriscids (Copepoda, Calanoida) from anchialine caves in the Bahamas
Sarsia, 2004Three new monotypic genera, Azygonectes, Cryptonectes and Minnonectes, and the male of Oinella longiseta Fosshagen, Boxshall & Iliffe are described. New records are made of Balinella ornata Fosshagen, Boxshall & Iliffe, Bofuriella vorata Fosshagen, Boxshall & Iliffe and Bomburiella gigas Fosshagen, Boxshall & Iliffe.

Microbial diversity in Adriatic anchialine caves
2019Background: Anchialine caves can be defined as tidally-influenced subterranean estuary located within crevicular and cavernous karst and volcanic terrains that extends inland to the limit of seawater penetration. The anchialine ecosystem supports a diverse biotic assemblage predominantly comprising stygobiotic species of marine origin, many of which ...

Habitat-Based Conservation of Anchialine Cave Crustaceans
Abstract Anchialine ecology is a relatively new endeavor, dating to the early 1980s with the application of technical cave diving methodology to scientific investigations of underwater cave ecosystems. The first major discoveries involved the new class Remipedia from blue holes in the Bahamas and the new order Mictacea from Bermuda ...Thomas M. Iliffe +3 more
