Global biodiversity and phylogenetic evaluation of remipedia (crustacea).

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Remipedia is one of the most recently discovered classes of crustaceans, first described in 1981 from anchialine caves in the Bahamas Archipelago. The class is divided into the order Enantiopoda, represented by two fossil species, and Nectiopoda, which ...

A glimpse into the dark – The bacterial and archaeal diversity of tropical anchialine cave sediments

open access: yesAccess Microbiology, 2023
Using Ion Torrent sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene, we investigated the sediment from four anchialine caves on Eleuthera (Bahamas). Anchialine caves are secluded, landlocked marine ecosystems, with high degrees of endemism. In the cave sediments, the bacterial and archaeal communities differ from marine communities and between caves ...

NEW SUPERFAMILY OF CALANOIDA (COPEPODA) FROM AN ANCHIALINE CAVE IN THE BAHAMAS [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Crustacean Biology, 1996
ABSTRACT A new calanoid copepod, Fosshagenia ferrarii, new genus, new species, was found in plankton samples collected in an anchialine cave of Caicos Islands, Bahamas. A combination of features found in this species separates it as the type of a new superfamily.

Screening of NaCl salinity sensitivity across eight species of subterranean amphipod genus Niphargus

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2022
Secondary salinization of freshwater is becoming a growing environmental problem. Currently, there is few data available on the effects of salinisation on subterranean crustaceans that are vital for the maintenance of groundwater ecosystem functioning ...

How is the anchialine fauna distributed within a cave? A study of the Ox Bel Ha System, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico [PDF]

open access: yesSubterranean Biology, 2019
A study describing the diversity and distribution pattern of the stygobitic fauna in the Ox Bel Ha anchialine cave system adjacent to the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico is presented.

Iodine and nutrient speciation in anchialine cave waters (Bjejajka Cave, East Adriatic Coast)

open access: yesEstuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2009
In oxic seawater dissolved iodine is principally consisted of iodate and iodide, at a total concentration of ~450 nM. Although iodate is thermodynamically favoured form of inorganic iodine, iodide concentrations may be high, as is the case in surface waters of temperate shelf seas.

Global distribution of anchialine caves.

open access: yes, 2013
Epicontinental anchialine cave systems are indicated by dots and anchialine waters on isolated seamount islands by triangles. Remipedia show a disjunct global distribution pattern, with all known species restricted to epicontinental anchialine caves. The

Venomics of Remipede Crustaceans Reveals Novel Peptide Diversity and Illuminates the Venom’s Biological Role

open access: yesToxins, 2017
We report the first integrated proteomic and transcriptomic investigation of a crustacean venom. Remipede crustaceans are the venomous sister group of hexapods, and the venom glands of the remipede Xibalbanus tulumensis express a considerably more ...
