Human eosinophilic enteritis caused by dog hookworm Ancylostoma caninum

open access: yesLancet, The, 1990
An epidemic of eosinophilic enteritis (93 cases) has occurred in Townsville, northern Queensland, Australia. A hookworm was found attached to a resected, inflamed ileal segment from 1 patient but the species could not be identified.

Ancylostoma caninum: Pharyngeal activity in vitro

Experimental Parasitology, 1971
Abstract One hundred Ancylostoma caninum , in groups of 10 in a special apparatus, were offered dog blood and serum, NaCl, Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate, polyvinylpyrrolidone, intestinal epithelial extracts, heated serum, and dialyzed and nondialyzed fractions of serum. The worms' rate of suction was measured.

Influence of Fertilization on Ovogenesis in Ancylostoma caninum

The Journal of Parasitology, 1970
Fertilization is necessary in Ancylostoma caninum for the formation of the inner layers of the egg shell. These inner layers appear to be formed after telophase I by coalescence of secretory granules that rise to the surface of the ovum from within. Eggs that lack these layers are very fragile and easily destroyed.

On the phospholipids of adultAncylostoma caninum

Experientia, 1977
The phospholipid composition of Ancylostoma caninum has been examined. Phospholipids amounted to 0.9% of the wet weight of the parasite. Ethanolamine and choline containing lipids comprised about 76% of the total phospholipids. Lysolecithin, sphingomyelin, phosphatidyl inositol and phosphatidyl serine were present in minor amounts.

In vitro expression of a recombinant paramyosin of Ancylostoma caninum

International Journal for Parasitology, 1998
The objective of this study was to characterise a recombinant antigen of Ancylostoma caninum that had been identified by immunoscreening with selected antisera described elsewhere. In vitro expression of clone 341 produced a protein with an apparent molecular mass of approximately 34 kDa which was recognised in Western blots by antisera against whole ...

Attachment and feeding behavior of Ancylostoma caninum

Zeitschrift fr Parasitenkunde, 1970
The feeding behavior of Ancylostoma caninum was studied to define its relationship to associated blood loss. Wells' method of observing worms in vivo was used, and the observations were extended to worms and tissues that were fixed together after various periods of 1 to 18 minutes and up to 2 hours. At necropsy attached worms were excised together with

Control of Ancylostoma caninum in the Dog with Thiabendazole

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1970
SUMMARY Dogs 4 to 8 weeks old were infected by artificial exposure to Ancylostoma caninum larvae and were allotted to 2 groups of 12 dogs each. Dogs in 1 group were given thiabendazole (tbz) orally once daily for 70 days (starting 2 days before exposure to infection) at the dosage of 20 mg./kg. of body weight.

Ancylostoma caninum: Uptake of 14C-glucose in vitro

Experimental Parasitology, 1970
Abstract The route of 14 C-glucose absorption by Ancylostoma caninum incubated in dog serum was studied by using autoradiographic techniques and by determining the amount of label incorporated into endogenous glycogen. A comparison was made between worms with fluid intake via the esophagus restricted by a constricting rubber collar, and those ...

The Function of Microtubules during Spermatogenesis of Ancylostoma caninum

The Journal of Parasitology, 1982
Ancylostoma caninum spermatogonia appeared as unspecialized cells with large nuclei and little cytoplasm when examined by electron microscopy. Mitochondria and ribosomes were numerous but endoplasmic reticulum of either the rough or smooth variety was rarely observed.
