The natural combustion of solid-fossil fuels in Italy is not currently mitigated or actively monitored because of the scarcity of these resources and their relatively low economic value, especially since the Second World War. In recent years, the spontaneous combustion of peat in Italy was recorded.

GROWTH AND SURVIVAL OF BACTERIA IN PEAT: I. POWDERED PEAT AND RELATED PRODUCTS
Canadian Journal of Research, 1947Comparative tests of various powdered materials showed that well humified peat was superior to other preparations in maintaining the test bacteria in viable condition. Under the test conditions, sterilization of peat improved it as a medium for the maintenance of high numbers of viable cells.

Surface and colloid chemistry of peat and peat dewatering. Electrostatic effects
Colloid & Polymer Science, 1988A study of the potentiometric titration and metal ion binding properties of peat is reported. Peat is found to behave as a typical polyelectrolyte system which, especially at high pH's, can be very highly charged. One difference between peat and commonly investigated polyelectrolyte systems (like poly(acrylate)) is that a very broad spectrum of pKa ...

Peat, Hay-Fever and Pharmacognosy
Nature, 1947THAT three subjects so diverse as peat, hay-fever and pharmacognosy should have a common meeting-ground of fundamental importance appears somewhat surprising. The common ground is found in the morphological study of pollen. Pollen grains were first studied in detail about 250 years ago by Nehemiah Grew.

Fractionation and characterization of extracts of peat and peat-forming plants
1981Peat contains substances, especially waxy ones that are technically usable and soluble into organic solvents. The objective of the present investigation was to study their origin and reasons for fairly significant differences in their amounts between separate peat de posits and peat samples.
