Journal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.We highlight an overlooked pathway in ecosystem functioning: the role of animal carcass decomposition in trace element cycling. By linking animal life cycles to landscape‐scale processes, we explain how large animals redistribute scarce elements and influence spatial heterogeneity, with implications for ecosystem functioning and restoration.
