Spatial Connectivity Through Mountains and Deserts Drove South American Scorpions Dispersal

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 1, Page 245-256, January 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim The aim of this study is to infer the geographic dispersal paths and the environmental conditions that shaped the historical biogeography of Brachistosternus scorpions in South America. We evaluated the role that altitude and aridity had on the geographic distance that each species dispersed from the location of the genus common ancestor ...

Avian phylogenetic and functional diversity are better conserved by land‐sparing than land‐sharing farming in lowland tropical forests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 10, Page 2497-2509, October 2024.
To minimise the loss of avian phylogenetic diversity and functional traits from farming in the Amazon, it is imperative to protect large blocks of undisturbed and regenerating forests. The intensification required within existing farmlands to make space for spared lands while meeting agricultural demand needs to be sustainable, avoiding long‐term ...

3D Shear Velocity Structure of the Caribbean—Northwestern South America Subduction Zone From Ambient Noise and Ballistic Rayleigh Wave Tomography

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 25, Issue 9, September 2024.
Abstract The Caribbean‐South America subduction zone is a flat subduction zone, with Laramide‐style thick‐skinned uplifts occurring in the Merida Andes, Sierra de Perija Range, and Santa Marta Massif. Geodetic measurements and historical seismicity show this region is storing strain energy and is capable of a mega‐thrust earthquake (M ≥ 8.0).

A phylogenetic framework to study desirable traits in the wild relatives of Theobroma cacao (Malvaceae)

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, Volume 62, Issue 5, Page 963-978, September 2024.
In this study, we aimed to reconstruct the phylogeny of the Theobromateae tribe with as many species as possible using WRKY DNA sequence and morphological data from herbarium specimens. We characterize the evolutionary trajectory of morphological characters and provide a framework that permits the study of crop wild relatives and the evolution of key ...
