Function of male and hermaphroditic flowers and size-dependent gender diphasy of Lloydia oxycarpa (Liliaceae) from Hengduan Mountains

open access: yesPlant Diversity, 2017
Although hermaphroditism is common in flowering plants, unisexual flowers occur in many plant taxa, forming various sexual systems. However, the sexual system of some plants is difficult to determine morphologically, given that their sex expression may ...

The Evolution and Maintenance of Androdioecy

open access: yesAnnual Review of Ecology and Systematics, 2002
▪ Abstract  Examples of androdioecy, the coexistence of males and hermaphrodites, was unknown when the subject was last reviewed about two decades ago. Since then, several examples have been discovered in both plants and animals, and we are now in a position to reappraise theoretical work on the subject.

Selection and Maintenance of Androdioecy in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesGenetics, 2002
Abstract Caenorhabditis elegans is an androdioecious nematode composed of selfing hermaphrodites and rare males. A model of male maintenance demonstrates that selfing rates in hermaphrodites cannot be too high or else the frequency of males will be driven down to the rate of spontaneous nondisjunction of the X chromosome.

Evolutionary game in an androdioecious population: Coupling of outcrossing and male production

open access: yesJournal of Theoretical Biology, 2021
Androdioecy, the coexistence of hermaphrodites and males, is very rare in vertebrates but occurs in mangrove killifish living in ephemeral or unstable habitats. Hermaphrodites reproduce both by outcrossing with males and by selfing. Outbreeding is advantageous because of inbreeding depression, but it requires encounters with males.

Evolution analysis of sweet osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans) cultivars based on sequence-related amplified polymorphism molecular marker

open access: yes浙江大学学报. 农业与生命科学版, 2017
Sweet osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans) is one of the top ten famous native horticultural plants in China. According to different flowering seasons, flower colors and inflorescence types, the cultivars are divided into four groups: O.

Costs of reproduction in flowering plants

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 247, Issue 1, Page 55-70, July 2025.
Summary Costs of reproduction arise when investments into current reproduction reduce future reproductive fitness. Studies on reproductive costs use diverse approaches, including the analysis of gene expression, physiology, trade‐offs between reproduction and growth/survival, and the impact of reproductive investments on population growth.

A review of sexual strategies in Cannabis sativa L. under genomic and environmental controls

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences &Environment, Volume 8, Issue 1, March 2025.
Abstract Cannabis sativa L. (marijuana, hemp) is one of the few dioecious angiosperm species with sex chromosomes. Along with other closely related genera from the family Cannabaceae, C. sativa exhibits monoecious (unisexual flowers at different locations within the individual) and dioecious (two sexes in separate individuals) populations.

Evolution of the sex ratio and effective number under gynodioecy and androdioecy [PDF]

open access: yesTheoretical Population Biology, 2017
AbstractWe address the evolution of effective number of individuals under androdioecy and gynodioecy. We analyze dynamic models of autosomal modifiers of weak effect on sex expression. In our zygote control models, the sex expressed by a zygote depends on its own genotype, while in our maternal control models, it depends on the genotype of its maternal

We need a multidimensional view of the plant reproduction continuum

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 3, Page 656-663, March 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Sexual reproduction produces genetic variation, which is key for adaptations, whereas vegetative reproduction implies the replication and separation of ramets. Such a difference has deep implications for individual fitness and trait evolution and affects organismal ...
