This study presents the computational components and workflow developed to conduct probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) in New Zealand (NZ) using physics‐based ground‐motion simulations, referred to as “CyberShake NZ.” Semi‐automated procedures generate multiple realizations of kinematic rupture models, create rupture‐specific velocity models ...

Normal mode splitting function measurements of anelasticity and attenuation in the Earth's inner core [PDF]
We have used the iterative spectral fitting method to measure both the elastic and anelastic splitting functions of 20 inner core sensitive normal modes.

Abstract An unprecedented record‐breaking extreme hourly rainfall event (201.9 mm/hr) occurred on 20 July 2021, at the Zhengzhou Station, China. In previous studies, a meso‐γ $\gamma $‐scale convective storm is found to be the direct process causing the rainfall; also found is the impact of processes on other scales (synoptic‐ and meso‐scales), in ...

Results of the first comprehensive quantitative analysis of the mechanical properties of New Zealand nephrite jade (pounamu), including hardness, Young's modulus, fracture toughness and notched flexural strength are reported for seven samples. These samples of exceptional quality were pre‐selected by experienced Māori carvers through a ranking process.

This paper reconstructs the anelastic approximation in such a manner that it can be applied to any kind of fluid. As a result, it turns out that the work done by the buoyancy force in the approximation corresponds to the conversion between kinetic and internal energy. Also, the conditions for the applicability of the approximation are clarified.

In Situ Heating STEM of the Thickness‐Dependent Evolution of Ferroelastic Domains
In‐situ heating scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with machine‐learning segmentation is used to study the thickness and temperature dependent behavior of ferroelastic domain walls in free‐standing LaAlO3 samples. The results quantify domain wall curvature and density throughout cooling, revealing a pronounced thickness‐dependent ...

Abstract This study reconstructs a multistep gravity wave (GW) pathway, from the generation of primary GWs by deep convection in the troposphere to the generation of secondary GWs that drive semi‐concentric medium‐scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) in the ionosphere, during the record‐breaking heavy rainfall over Kyushu, Japan, in August

Abstract Boundary‐layer turbulence and clouds play an essential role in regulating surface fluxes and the Earth's radiative balance, but their parameterization in global models remains a significant source of uncertainty. This paper describes a novel implementation of the Simplified Higher Order Closure (SHOC) coupled with a multi‐plume eddy ...

Investigating Layered Cratonic Lithosphere in the Fennoscandian Shield
Abstract Cold, thick, and chemically depleted lithosphere with high seismic velocity and low attenuation characterizes continental cratons. However, discrepancies between xenolith‐based thermal constraints and those inferred from surface‐wave seismic models, together with the widespread observation of mid‐lithosphere discontinuities, challenge the ...

Fortnightly Earth rotation, ocean tides and mantle anelasticity
This study of the fortnightly Mf tide comprises three main topics: (1) a new determination of the fortnightly component of polar motion and length of day (LOD) from a multidecade time-series of observed space-geodetic data; (2) the use of the polar ...
