Coronary angioscopy evaluates the composition of the atherosclerotic plaque by direct examination of the arterial wall. The angioscope is fitted with a balloon which prevents assessment of the proximal segment of the vessels. The fibre optic system provides and excellent view of the mid and distal segments of the coronary arteries.

Though this invasive radiologic procedure demonstrates vascular anatomy and areas of narrowing and blockage, it does not define the specific cause of the occlusion. The authors present the results of their color fluorescein angiographies carried out with a pocket retinograph equipped with new interferential filters. After the graphic examination, they propose to use these same filters mounted on different instruments for binocular and monocular angioscopy. Ten angioscopies with a pressure infusion set resulted in similar visualization times and irrigation volumes as 42 angioscopies with a specially constructed roller pump. Diagnostic image quality, however, was obtained almost exclusively with the roller pump. Three examinations were nondiagnostic.

Improved Method of Fluorescein Angioscopy

To the Editor. —The technique of fluorescein angioscopy has been used by ophthalmologists to supplement ophthalmoscopy in the diagnosis of retinal diseases. 1,2 The usual technique consists of the intravenous injection of fluorescein sodium following placement of a cobalt blue filter over the illumination source of the indirect ophthalmoscope.

Quantitative Endovascular Angioscopy
