The antlions dig a conical simple pit in sand to catch ants. The funnel shape of the trap is deliberate with a critical angle of repose and is steep and shallow enough to trigger avalanches and cause struggling prey to fall into the funnel.

Angle of repose and segregation in cohesive granular matter [PDF]

We study the effect of fluids on the angle of repose and the segregation of granular matter poured into a silo. The experiments are conducted in two regimes where: (i) the volume fraction of the fluid is small and it forms liquid bridges between particles, and (ii) the particles are completely immersed in the fluid.
