Aspects of the Biology of Juvenile Freshwater Eels (Anguillidae) in New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
<p>The early freshwater life of the two species of New Zealand freshwater eels, Anguilla australis schmidtii Phillipps and A. dieffenbachii Gray was studied involving an examination of 8131 glass-eels, 5275 migratory elvers, and 4291 resident eels of less than 26 cm. Most eels were collected from the Makara Stream, Wellington by set-net, hand-net

Reviewing the Potential for Behavioral Guidance to Improve Downstream Passage of Out‐Migrating Anguillid Eels

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 41, Issue 10, Page 2287-2296, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Hydroelectric dams and their turbine infrastructure threaten out‐migrating anguillid eels en route to marine spawning grounds. For decades, invested parties have attempted to guide eels away from turbines and toward safe passage routes. A subset of this work (hereafter behavioral guidance) has involved exploiting sensory biology (e.g., sight ...

Assessing the species composition of tropical eels (Anguillidae) in Aceh Waters, Indonesia, with DNA barcoding gene cox1. [version 1; referees: 1 approved, 2 approved with reservations]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2017
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the species diversity of eels native to Aceh waters based on genetic data. Sampling was conducted in western coast waters of Aceh Province, Indonesia, from July to August 2016.

Sulawesi Stream Fish Communities Disconnected From the Sea: Absence of Diadromous and Dominance of Exotic Species

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 70, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Barriers can profoundly alter the composition of stream communities. In the tropical island of Sulawesi, streams are inhabited by a diversity of secondary freshwater fishes, mostly diadromous species. Many streams, however, are modified by human activities for various reasons, involving the construction of barriers that impede fish migration ...

Habitat Matters: Exploring the Preferences of the European Eel (Anguilla anguilla) in Short Karstic Lotic Ecosystems

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 35, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Since the early 1980s, the recruitment of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) to the European continent has declined dramatically. There is a lack of research utilizing biotic variables to determine European eel habitat selection, particularly in short karstic coastal catchments.

A new maximum length for Anguilla anguilla (Anguillidae)

open access: yesCybium, 2007
One specimen of the eel Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758), was caught in the vicinity of the town of Ploče (eastern Adriatic, Croatian coast). Its total length TL=1487 mm represents maximum reported length for this species.

Revealing Chronotypes Across Aquatic Species Using Acoustic Telemetry

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 26, Issue 6, Page 1134-1145, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Acoustic telemetry offers valuable opportunities to investigate individual variability in circadian‐related and other behaviours and how environmental cues shape these patterns in wild fish populations. However, this potential has not yet been fully exploited.

THE NEEDS AND IMPORTANCE OF FATTY ACIDS IN THE NUTRITION OF FISH [PDF]

open access: yesCroatian Journal of Fisheries, 1996
According to the needs for the essential fatty acids, the fish can be classified in three groups: For the fish from Salrrwnidae family (Oncorhynhcus kisutch, O. keta, O. nerka and O. tshawytscha) the essential is 18: 3 in the quantity of 1%.

A Curved‐Bar Rack‐Bypass System With Innovative Foil Shaped Bars: Hydraulics, Operational Aspects, and Swimming Behavior of Downstream Moving Brown Trout

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 61, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract Curved bar rack ‐ bypass systems (CBR‐BS) are a promising technology for diverting downstream moving fish away from hydropower intakes. A CBR functions as a mechanical behavioral barrier by creating high velocity and pressure gradients along its bars, guiding approaching fish that exhibit avoidance reactions towards the bypass.
