Angular velocity and time derivative of angular displacement
American Journal of Physics, 1986It is shown that, given the angular displacement vector Φ(t)for a rigid object, the angular velocity can be found by rotating dΦ/dt about Φ through angle 1/2 Φ and decreasing the component perpendicular to Φ by (1/ 1/2 Φ)sin 1/2 Φ. The result is illustrated by considering a regular precession at a fixed angle with the vertical.
