Perceptual causality and animacy
Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 2000Certain simple visual displays consisting of moving 2-D geometric shapes can give rise to percepts with high-level properties such as causality and animacy. This article reviews recent research on such phenomena, which began with the classic work of Michotte and of Heider and Simmel.

Process Studies, 2021
This article undertakes a critical analysis of the adoption of process metaphysics in the field of archaeology and anthropology for the explanation of animism. The field of "new animism" has adopted process metaphysics in order to counter the nineteenth-century definition of animism as epistemological projection toward animism as ontological condition.

Parametric induction of animacy experience
Consciousness and Cognition, 2008Graphical displays of simple moving geometrical figures have been repeatedly used to study the attribution of animacy in human observers. Yet little is known about the relevant movement characteristics responsible for this experience. The present study introduces a novel parametric research paradigm, which allows for the experimental control of ...

We conducted an experiment, in which we found that training a drone increased its animacy, attachment to it, and affinity with it. Additionally, we found that the drone impressed trainers as a puppy while it impressed non-trainers as a fly.

Jones, in conversation with Braddock, explores a range of issues related to animacy and her use of the term ‘performative’. They consider a trajectory from Jones’s Body Art/Performing the Subject (1998) to her current thinking on material traces and sculpture/performance that bears the signs of ‘having been made’.

The concept of ‘animacy’ concerns the fundamental and cognitive question of the extent to which we recognize and express living things as saliently human-like or animal-like. In Animacy and Reference Mutsumi Yamamoto pursues two main objectives: First, to establish a conceptual framework of animacy, and secondly, to explain how the concept of animacy

AbstractAlternations between ‘transitive’ and ‘intransitive’ verbs in Blackfoot signal neither an aspectual shift nor the addition or suppression of internal arguments. Rather, ‘transitive’ morphology formally licenses DP objects; ‘intransitive’ morphology allows NP, CP, or no object.

The paper investigates the nature of animacy distinction in Kaakye (Kwa, Niger-Congo). It describes the various grammatical manifestations of the animacy concepts in Kaakye. Based on the data presented, it is observed that animacy is a crucial determinant in the choice of forms and behaviours of nominal prefixs, pronouns, nominal modifiers, and concord
