Human Perception of Animacy in Light of the Uncanny Valley Phenomenon

Perception, 2017
The uncanny valley hypothesis by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori posits a nonlinear relation between human replicas’ human likeness and the emotional responses they elicit. In three studies, we corroborated the uncanny valley hypothesis, using the uncanny phenomenon as a vehicle to shed a new light on human animacy perception.

The Uncanny Valley Phenomenon and the Temporal Dynamics of Face Animacy Perception

Perception, 2020
Human replicas highly resembling people tend to elicit eerie sensations—a phenomenon known as the uncanny valley. To test whether this effect is attributable to people’s ascription of mind to (i.e., mind perception hypothesis) or subtraction of mind from androids (i.e., dehumanization hypothesis), in Study 1, we examined the effect of face exposure ...

Effects of synchronous motion and spatial alignment on animacy perception

2016 8th International Conference on Knowledge and Smart Technology (KST), 2016
Human visual system extracts or creates various rich information from low-level visual features. Animacy perception, where an obviously non-animate object elicits to us a feeling that the object is animate, is also susceptible to motion trajectory. For example, a simple dot, when moving with the random trajectory based on 1/f fluctuation, provide a ...

Considerations on Perception of “Animacy” in the Motion of a Single Object

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 2004
Many studies have focused on the factors related to attribution of meaning to motion. In the majority of these studies, two or more moving objects were used, often on a nonhomogeneous background. In the present paper the literature on the perception of animacy of a single object moving on a homogeneous background is reviewed.

Effects of context on the perception of animacy and intentionality

2017
We explored the effect of different spatiotemporal contexts on the perceptual saliency of animacy and intentionality. Paired-comparisons and ratings were used to compare the impressions of animacy elicited by a small square moving on the screen, either alone or in the context of a second square. The context element was either static or moved showing an
