Animal-assisted and nature-based intervention on a farm for young adults with autism and social withdrawal – A one-year follow-up with a socioeconomic approach

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background Interventions in the form of animal-assisted and nature-based activities are promising for young adults with autism, but there is a knowledge gap concerning the long-term values of these.Aim The aim was to describe the activity levels in daily

Dog Training Intervention Shows Social-Cognitive Change in the Journals of Incarcerated Youth

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2018
There is limited research assessing the effectiveness of Animal-Assisted Therapy in at-risk adolescent populations. In a recent study, 138 adjudicated adolescents participated in a randomized controlled trial of an animal-assisted intervention, in which ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Australian University Students’ Experience of Animal-Assisted Education: An Exploratory Study

open access: yesAnimals
University students experience poorer mental health outcomes when compared to the general population. Poor mental health has been associated with reduced wellbeing and low academic performance, resulting in higher rates of withdrawal.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Canines in the Classroom Revisited: Recent Developments Relating to Students\u27 Utilization of Service Animals at Primary and Secondary Educational Institutions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In April 2010 the author presented an article on the topic of the use of service animals by juveniles in a specific environment — primary and secondary educational institutions at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Animal Law Symposium. Since that time there have

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
