Complexity in Animal Communication: Estimating the Size of N-Gram Structures

open access: yesEntropy, 2014
In this paper, new techniques that allow conditional entropy to estimate the combinatorics of symbols are applied to animal communication studies to estimate the communication’s repertoire size.

Development of Adapalene Loaded Liposome Based Gel for Acne

open access: yesGels, 2023
Retinoids are considered the mainstay treatment for moderate to severe acne. Adapalene, a third-generation retinoid, has physiochemical properties which hinder the effective delivery of the drug to the skin.

Size control mechanism in animals [PDF]

open access: yesChinese Science Bulletin, 2016
It remains to be mysterious for years as how distinct animals and their organs attain proper sizes. About a decade ago, Science listed “Top 125” to-be-solved scientific issues and included “size control mechanism” into it. Elucidation of the molecular, cellular and evolutionary mechanism of size control in animals especially in mammals would help us ...

Payments for Conservation of Animal Genetic Resources in Agriculture: One Size Fits All?

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
Local livestock breeds in Slovenia have been eligible for financial incentives in the form of a fixed payment per livestock unit (LU) since 2002. The scheme has however not been successful in reversing the erosion of animal genetic resources (AnGR). This

Scaling in animal group-size distributions

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1999
An elementary model of animal aggregation is presented. The group-size distributions resulting from this model are truncated power laws. The predictions of the model are found to be consistent with data that describe the group-size distributions of tuna fish, sardinellas, and African buffaloes.

Is animal welfare better on smaller dairy farms? Evidence from 3,085 dairy farms in Germany

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2022
: The structural change toward larger (dairy) farms is often criticized because it supposedly has a negative effect on farm animal welfare. We investigated this criticism using cross-sectional survey data from 3,085 German dairy farms.

Estimating the size distribution of plastics ingested by animals [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Abstract The ingestion of plastics appears to be widespread throughout the animal kingdom with risks to individuals, ecosystems and human health. Despite growing information on the location, abundance and size distribution of plastics in the environment, it cannot be assumed that any given animal will ingest all sizes of plastic ...

Critical Domain Problem for the Reaction–Telegraph Equation Model of Population Dynamics

open access: yesMathematics, 2018
A telegraph equation is believed to be an appropriate model of population dynamics as it accounts for the directional persistence of individual animal movement.
