Mechanoluminescent HOF Nanotransducers Enabled Sono‐Optogenetics in Parkinsonian Rats

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present a mechanoluminescent system utilizing porous hydrogen‐bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) as a toolkit for focused ultrasound‐triggered, non‐invasive light delivery to the deep brain in rats. This approach enables the specific activation of PV‐GPe neurons in dopamine‐depleted Parkinson's disease rat models, resulting in a comparable alleviation

A Molecular Shielding Strategy to Develop Low Protein Binding, Renal Clearable Pan‐Cancer Near‐Infrared Probes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A molecular shielding strategy to convert “protein‐sticky” and “non‐tumor specific” clinical ICG dye, into a “low protein binding” and “tumor‐targeting” dye with prolonged blood circulation and renal clearance is described. These shielded ICGs demonstrate strong tumor accumulation and optimal tissue clearance, resulting in high tumor‐to‐background ...

The Nature of Animality

open access: yes, 2022
In Chapter 16, “The Nature of Animality,” Michael Lundblad explores how questions of animal (and human) nature animate the contemporary interdisciplinary fields of posthumanism, multispecies ethnography, science and technology studies, animality studies,

Animal Welfare (See Animal Ethics; Animal Research; Animal Rights)

2021
Animal welfare refers to the quality of life of animals that humans relate to and have moral obligations. The state of an animal’s welfare indicates how the animal is coping (physiologically, behaviorally, cognitively, and emotionally) with the conditions in which it lives.

Animal Welfare and Animal Rights

2018
In this chapter a distinction is made between animal welfare, for which a scientific approach is possible, and animal rights, which requires an ethical consideration. Our relationship with animals has changed most for food-producing animals, having evolved from one of necessity to one of exploitation of many of the managed animals.

Animal behavior and animal welfare

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1991
Summary The value of behavioral techniques in assessing animal welfare, and in particular assessing the psychological well being of animals, is reviewed. Using cats and horses as examples, 3 behavioral methods are presented: (1) comparison of behavior patterns and time budgets; (2) choice tests; and (3) operant conditioning. The behaviors of intact and
