Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, 1988Animal liberationists tend to divide into two mutually antagonistic camps: animal welfarists, who share a utilitarian moral outlook, and animal rightists, who presuppose a structure of basic rights. However, the gap between these groups tends to be exaggerated by their allegiance to oversimplified versions of their favored moral frameworks.

When is an animal, not an animal?
Journal of Biological Education, 1981The concepts of ‘animal’ held by some New Zealand primary, secondary, and tertiary students were explored using both an interview and multiplechoice survey approach. The results indicate that many students of all ages have a restricted concept of ‘animal’ compared with that of a biologist. The implications of these results for teaching are discussed.
