3D Printing of Micropatterned Anion Exchange Membranes

ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2016
Micropatterned anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have been 3D printed via a photoinitiated free radical polymerization and quaternization process. The photocurable formulation, consisting of diurethane dimethacrylate (DUDA), poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), dipentaerythritol penta-/hexa- acrylate, and 4-vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC), was directly ...

Hydroxide Solvation and Transport in Anion Exchange Membranes

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2016
Understanding hydroxide solvation and transport in anion exchange membranes (AEMs) can provide important insight into the design principles of these new membranes. To accurately model hydroxide solvation and transport, we developed a new multiscale reactive molecular dynamics model for hydroxide in aqueous solution, which was then subsequently modified

(Invited) Anion Exchange Membranes

ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2019
I didn't think I was going to work on anion exchange membranes until Shimshon gave me a call in early 2008 wanting to talk about quaternary ammonium-containing polymers. It has been an interesting journey since then. CellEra's support allowed me to hire my first postdoc - Jingling Yan - and also introduced me to a great cast of characters including ...

Metal-Cation-Based Anion Exchange Membranes

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2012
Here we present the first metal-cation-based anion exchange membranes (AEMs), which were synthesized by copolymerization and cross-linking of a norbornene monomer functionalized with a water-soluble bis(terpyridine)ruthenium(II) complex and dicyclopentadiene. Each ruthenium complex has two associated counteranions, unlike most ammonium- and phosphonium-

Bicarbonate and chloride anion transport in anion exchange membranes

Journal of Membrane Science, 2016
Abstract Quaternary ammonium poly(sulfone) based anion exchange membrane (AEM) in Cl− and HCO3−forms were characterized chemically and morphologically. It was found that the surface of the membrane in both of the forms has highly connective island-like structure, where the diameters of the hydrophilic regions are approximately 5–20 nm.

A Study on the Competitive Permeability of Anions in Anion Exchange Membrane

Journal of the Chinese Chemical Society, 1976
AbstractThe selective permeability of two species of critical ions coexisting in Solution 1 for a third species of ions of the same charge in Solution 2 penetrate through the anion exchange membrane has been studied. The competitive permeability of coexisting ions depends on various concentrations, compositions and reaction time with the restriction ...

Multicomponent absorption of anions in commercial anion-exchange membranes

Journal of Membrane Science, 2007
Abstract The equilibrium uptake of aqueous NaCl–NaBr and NaCl–NaNO 3 mixtures into Neosepta ® AMX and Selemion ® AMV anion-exchange membranes was measured experimentally and modeled theoretically, where the total external salt concentration was fixed at 0.1 M. The model, which considered the membrane microstructure as an array of cylindrical pores

Preparations and characterizations of anion exchange membranes and ionomers for anion exchange membrane fuel cells

2015
Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) that utilize anion exchange membranes (AEMs) as solid polymer electrolytes have been attracting increasing attention in the past few decades. AEMFCs not only exhibit enhanced reaction kinetics for both fuel oxidation and oxygen reduction, but also possess improved stability and durability of catalysts in ...

Advanced development of anion-exchange membrane electrolyzers for hydrogen production: from anion-exchange membranes to membrane electrode assemblies

Chemical Communications
Anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) has attracted attention owing to its operation in alkaline environments, which offers the advantage of not requiring the use of precious metals.

Studies on anion exchange membranes having permselectivity for specific anions in electrodialysis — effect of hydrophilicity of anion exchange membranes on permselectivity of anions

Journal of Membrane Science, 2000
Abstract Recent studies on anion exchange membranes and electrodialysis methods to permeate specific anions through the membranes are reviewed. The studies are classified: (1) to increase cross-linkage of the anion exchange membranes, (2) to form tight surface layers on the anion exchange membranes, (3) to decrease hydrophilicity of the anion ...
