Ankle fractures are one of the most common injuries in the elderly and their incidence is anticipated to increase over the next 20 years. Appropriate management of ankle fractures in this population requires an understanding of the issues unique to the elderly. Osteoporosis must be considered when counseling patients about their ankle fracture.

Although ankle injuries are common, it is imperative for the treating physician to be able to identify the mechanism of injury and accurately restore the normal anatomy of the ankle joint. Attention must be given to restoring the normal alignment and length of the fibula because of its dominant role in controlling talar stability. The medial ankle must

Maisonneuve fracture (MF) is defined as an ankle fracture-dislocation associated always with a fracture of the proximal quarter of the fibula and rupture of the anterior and interosseous tibiofibular ligaments. Other injuries are variable. Recent CT studies have demonstrated that MF is a far more complex injury than initially supposed.

This article is aimed at accident and emergency and orthopaedic senior house officers. While this review is not exhaustive, it attempts to emphasize some key points as an aid to the safe initial management of ankle fractures as they are such common injuries, whose management can be more clearly understood by the application of basic principles.

Fractures and Fracture—Dislocations of the Ankle
Postgraduate Medicine, 1959Accurate diagnosis and proper choice of treatment in fractures and fracture-dislocations of the ankle require a knowledge of the mechanisms of injury.Good x-rays, centered over the joint in true anteroposterior and lateral projections, are also prerequisites to accurate diagnosis.Closed methods of treatment may be used in many cases, but certain ...

PHYSEAL FRACTURES OF THE ANKLE
Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, 1999Because the distal tibia is the third most common physeal injury, being able to assess and treat such a fracture accurately is a skill worth enhancing. Many factors contribute to the outcome of physeal injuries, but the physician's general knowledge of the physis, ability to order the right diagnostic tests, and classify the fracture can be the ...

Triplane fractures of the ankle
British Journal of Hospital Medicine, 2009Triplane fractures are fractures that occur in three planes. They occur in the adolescent population, with the ankle joint most frequently involved. Early recognition of the complex fracture pattern and appropriate treatment thereafter will maximize the chances of a favourable outcome.

When we discuss fractures of the ankle joint, we are reopening an old chapter in the history of surgery, yet one which seems strangely new to each succeeding generation, and one which still attracts attention and interest. Fractures of the ankle must have been familiar problems both to the ancients and in the practice of the surgeons of the middle ages.
