‘Who is the Gael who Would Not Weep?’: The Book of the O’Conor Don, Fearghal Óg Mac an Bhaird, and Late Bardic Poetry of Exile

open access: yesRenaissance Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract This article examines how late bardic poetry transforms the condition of exile into a literary mode that reimagines community and tradition. I argue that poetry of lament, blessing and devotion articulates a broader literary consciousness that anticipates modern notions of a national consciousness. The compilation of bardic verse in manuscript

Markov convexity and nonembeddability of the Heisenberg group [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We compute the Markov convexity invariant of the continuous infinite dimensional Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_\infty$ to show that it is Markov 4-convex and cannot be Markov $p$-convex for any $p < 4$.

Artifex Ars Cartographica: Collaboration Between Portuguese Painters and Cartographers in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries

open access: yesRenaissance Studies, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, there was no statutory difference between cartography, drawing and painting. These activities were performed then by craftsmen who were part of a vast group under the umbrella of ‘mechanical arts’ and fell under the ‘artifex’ category. Artifex were experts in any particular art, whether a craftsman,

Large Deviation Principle for Enhanced Gaussian Processes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We study large deviation principles for Gaussian processes lifted to the free nilpotent group of step N. We apply this to a large class of Gaussian processes lifted to geometric rough paths.

Detection of Toxic Gases and Volatile Organic Compounds Using Highly Adsorptive Nanomaterials: A Comprehensive Assessment

open access: yesEcoMat, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
This review highlights how nanomaterials with high adsorption capacities including carbon‐based structures, transition metal oxides, 2D layers, and zeolites enable sensitive and selective detection of toxic gases and VOCs. Their tailored properties and sensing mechanisms drive the development of next‐generation gas sensors for environmental and ...

Bifurcation values of polynomial functions and perverse sheaves [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
We characterize bifurcation values of polynomial functions by using the theory of perverse sheaves and their vanishing cycles. In particular, by introducing a method to compute the jumps of the Euler characteristics with compact support of their fibers ...

Sexual Selection Associated With an Aggressive Male Phenotype Reduces Population Size and Hinders Population Recovery After Heat Stress

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 29, Issue 4, April 2026.
Using experiments on soil mites, we show that sexual selection associated with an armed and aggressive male phenotype can reduce population size and stability, which lowers their resilience against acute heat stress. These effects linked with armed and aggressive phenotypes underline the importance of sexual selection in mediating population dynamics ...
