First evidence of anisotropic quenched disorder effects on a smectic liquid crystal confined in porous silicon [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We present a neutron scattering analysis of the structure of the smectic liquid crystal octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) confined in one-dimensional nanopores of porous silicon films (PS). The smectic transition is completely suppressed, leading to the extension

Resistance Rapid Heating of Aluminum Coatings in an Extreme High Vacuum–Adequate Atmosphere for Hot Stamping

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The subject of this work is the development of a corrosion‐protective coating on steel sheets for form hardening. Rapid heating in an extreme high vacuum (XHV)‐adequate atmosphere is a useful method to prevent oxidation during alloying of 22MnB5 and aluminum to obtain a metallurgical bonding.

Effect of Anodization time on Morphology and Electrochemical Impedance of Andic Oxide Films on Titanium Alloy in Tartrate Solution

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrochemical Science, 2014
The present study investigated the effect of anodization time on the anodic oxide films formed on titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V. The morphology, surface roughness, crystal structure, and electrochemical impedance of the anodic oxide films were studied

Fabrication of high quality ferromagnetic Josephson junctions

open access: yes, 2005
We present ferromagnetic Nb/Al2O3/Ni60Cu40/Nb Josephson junctions (SIFS) with an ultrathin Al2O3 tunnel barrier. The junction fabrication was optimized regarding junction insulation and homogeneity of current transport.

Interaction of MgO Recyclate‐Based Cermet Anode With KF‐AlF3‐Al2O3 at 800°C During Laboratory Scale Aluminum Molten Salt Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A carbon‐free, as‐sintered MgO–steel cermet anode, fabricated via cold isostatic pressing using MgO–C refractory recyclate, was evaluated under laboratory‐scale K‐cryolite electrolysis at 800°C. Operation at this reduced temperature, combined with the electrolyte's limited electrical conductivity, led to an increase in cell voltage.

Multiscale Fractal Descriptors Applied to Nanoscale Images

open access: yes, 2012
This work proposes the application of fractal descriptors to the analysis of nanoscale materials under different experimental conditions. We obtain descriptors for images from the sample applying a multiscale transform to the calculation of fractal ...

Toward Low‐Consumable Anodes: Process Simulation and Prospective Life Cycle Assessment of NiFe2O4‐NiO‐Ni‐Cu vs. Prebaked Anodes for Aluminum Production with use of Molten Salt Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐consumable nickel ferrite‐based anodes for the Hall–Héroult process are compared with conventional prebaked carbon anodes using thermodynamic simulation and prospective life cycle assessment under contrasting future electricity system pathways from 2025 to 2050.

Fabrication of WO3·2H2O nanoplatelet powder by breakdown anodization

open access: yesElectrochemistry Communications, 2019
Herein, the electrochemical synthesis of WO3 nanoplatelet powder is demonstrated in a novel electrolyte composed of ethylene glycol (EG), H2O and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EmimBF4). On applying an anodization potential of 40 V to the

Tailoring the photonic bandgap of porous silicon dielectric mirror

open access: yes, 2003
A systematic method to fabricate porous silicon one dimensional photonic crystals has been engineered to have a photonic bandwidth up to 2000nm. The observation of the tailorability of the photonic bandgap (PBG) underscores the requirement of the large ...
