Spatial observation‐error correlations for AMSU‐A in all‐sky assimilation: An ECMWF and UK Met Office intercomparison

Assimilation of AMSU‐A all‐sky observations can be increased up to fivefold if spatial observation‐error correlations are accounted for properly. New correlation estimates derived using data from ECMWF and the UK Met Office reveal that correlation length‐scales are between 75 and 150 km for AMSU‐A channels peaking in the troposphere. Using microwave imager observations to improve the ocean temperature in a coupled NWP system

A recent upgrade to the ECMWF IFS has implemented outer‐loop coupling between the atmosphere and the ocean. This work uses this method to pass ocean skin temperature estimates derived from satellite‐borne microwave imagers to the ocean data assimilation system; the updated ocean state is then passed back to the atmospheric system.

Coupled observation‐operator approximations in outer‐loop coupling data assimilation

We present a methodology for coupled variational data assimilation that allows the effect of coupled observation operators whilst maintaining separate minimisations across model components.
