Is Anopheles gambiae a Natural Host of Wolbachia?

open access: yesmBio, 2019
Wolbachia (Alphaproteobacteria, Rickettsiales) is an intraovarially transmitted symbiont of insects able to exert striking phenotypes, including reproductive manipulations and pathogen blocking.

Valorization of Ficus carica Pruning Residues as Selective Botanical Insecticides: Optimized Furanocoumarin Extraction, Efficacy Against Neotropical Stink Bugs, and Mechanistic Insights via Molecular Docking

open access: yesArchives of Insect Biochemistry and Physiology, Volume 122, Issue 4, August 2026.
Optimized extracts from Ficus carica pruning waste exhibit strong biological activity against major stink bug pests. Complementary in silico analyses suggest this efficacy relies on pest‐specific acetylcholinesterase inhibition, predicting a promising, pollinator‐safe alternative for sustainable agriculture.

Odorant reception in the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 2010
The mosquito Anopheles gambiae is the major vector of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. It locates its human hosts primarily through olfaction, but little is known about the molecular basis of this process. Here we functionally characterize the Anopheles gambiae odorant receptor (AgOr) repertoire.

Sex‐biasing gene drives for island mouse eradications: Modelling dispersal and mating behaviour for improved risk assessment preparedness

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 8, August 2026.
Though drive efficiency was highly influential to model outcomes, such parameters will likely be known prior to any experimental gene drive introductions. We conclude that understanding the ecological and life‐history characteristics specific to target populations will be critical to accurately predict gene drive outcomes and inform risk assessments ...

Fitness consequences of Anopheles gambiae population hybridization [PDF]

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2005
Abstract Background The use of transgenic mosquitoes with parasite inhibiting genes has been proposed as an integral strategy to control malaria transmission. However, release of exotic transgenic mosquitoes will bring in novel alleles along with parasite-inhibiting genes that may have unknown effects on native ...

Vectors and Vector‐Borne Diseases: Biology, Epidemiology and Integrated Control Strategies

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, Volume 150, Issue 7, Page 990-1015, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Vector‐Borne Diseases (VBDs), transmitted by arthropods such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and sandflies, represent a significant threat to global health. These diseases can be caused by a variety of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths.

A Highly Expressed Odorant Receptor Detects the Aggregation Pheromone Rhynchophorol in the Invasive American Palm Weevil

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 15, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Communication via aggregation pheromones is responsible for the behavioural and ecological characteristics of many species of weevils (Coleoptera). In insects, pheromones are detected by specialized odorant receptors (ORs), called pheromone receptors (PRs), which are usually highly expressed in olfactory sensory neurons localized in the ...

Distinct Swimming Behaviours in Pupae of Aedes, Anopheles and Culex Mosquitoes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 7, July 2026.
As improving our understanding of the ecology of mosquitoes, in particular of their juvenile stages, is required to develop or refine control strategies to prevent the transmission of deadly diseases, we here investigated the pupal surface swimming behaviour in 11 mosquito species of the genera Aedes, Anopheles and Culex.

Isolation and Characterization of Larvicidal Phenolic Acids from Kotschya thymodora Leaves

open access: yesJournal of Applied Sciences and Environmental Management, 2020
Malaria is a vector borne disease responsible for high morbidity, mortality and poverty in many tropical and subtropical countries. The disease is transmitted through a bite from an infected female Anopheles mosquito, amongst which Anopheles gambiae s.s
