Molecular Identification and Phylogeny of Natural Wolbachia Infection in Iranian Mosquitoes With a New Record of Wolbachia Supergroup B Infecting Anopheles hyrcanus Populations

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Background Mosquitoes are significant vectors of infectious diseases such as malaria and arboviruses, which pose public health challenges globally. Anopheles hyrcanus is widely distributed in northern Iran and neighboring Middle Eastern countries and is considered a potential vector of mosquito‐borne diseases in these regions.

Phylogenomics revealed migration routes and adaptive radiation timing of Holarctic malaria mosquito species of the Maculipennis Group

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2023
Background Phylogenetic analyses of closely related species of mosquitoes are important for better understanding the evolution of traits contributing to transmission of vector-borne diseases.

Urban Ponds and the Emerging Role of Garden Ponds: Ecosystem Services and Disservices, Multifunctionality, and Trade‐Offs

open access: yesWIREs Water, Volume 12, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
Urban ponds and garden ponds—a specific subset of the former, usually located in private gardens—are both typical examples of ponds in the urban landscape. They deliver multiple ecosystem services but can also contribute to ecosystem disservices. The role of garden ponds is largely unknown compared to other urban ponds.

Host‐feeding preferences of Culex pipiens and its potential significance for flavivirus transmission in the Camargue, France

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 39, Issue 3, Page 614-625, September 2025.
We identified Culex pipiens bloodmeals at the species level in natural, agricultural and peri‐urban habitats and calculated host preferences based on forage ratios. This analysis showed Passeriformes, and in particular Columba livia, Passer montanus and Turdus sp., to be the preferred Cx. pipiens hosts.

INSECT LIFE AND LETTERS: THE STUDIES OF HANNS HEINZ EWERS AND OTTO AND ROSE HECHT

open access: yesGerman Life and Letters, Volume 78, Issue 3, Page 342-363, July 2025.
ABSTRACT This article argues that vast histories of war and displacement in the twentieth century are connected to the small and almost unnoticeable lives of insects, and that philology has much to gain from paying attention to insect worlds. We examine two case studies: the work of the German entomologist Otto Hecht and his wife, Rose Caro Hecht, and ...

First Records of Coquillettidia (Coquillettidia) richiardii and Culex (Culex) perexiguus/univittatus (Diptera: Culicidae) Mosquitoes in Galicia (Northwest Spain)

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Three females of Coquillettidia richiardii (Ficalbi, 1889) and one female of Culex perexiguus Theobald, 1903/Culex univitattus Theobald, 1901, were recorded for the first time in Galicia (Northwest Spain) during entomological surveillance carried out by the regional vector surveillance network (ReGaViVec) between 2018 and 2022.

First Detection of West Nile Virus (WNV) Lineage 2 in Mosquitoes in the Republic of Kosovo

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
West Nile virus (WNV, family Flaviviridae) is the most geographically widespread arbovirus affecting humans. It circulates between wild birds and mosquitoes, while humans and horses are dead‐end hosts. In recent years, several outbreaks have been reported from European countries, including the Balkan Peninsula.

The complexities of blood‐feeding patterns in mosquitoes and sandflies and the burden of disease: A minireview

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 10, Issue 5, September 2024.
Mosquitoes and phlebotomine sandflies are infectious disease vectors through hematophagy. The development of hematophagy likely provided an evolutionary advantage, offering a rich nutrient source for reproduction. These insects exhibit diverse blood‐feeding patterns, from invertebrates to various vertebrates. Multiple sensory cues to guide host‐seeking
