Seven patients with congenital anosmia underwent detailed chemosensory evaluation, followed by the performance of biopsies of the olfactory region. Olfactory epithelium was not found in any of the biopsy specimens. It appears therefore that patients with congenital anosmia lack any olfactory epithelium.
