The avian eggshell is a complex, multifunctional biomineral composed of a calcium carbonate mineral phase and an organic phase of lipids and proteins. The outermost layer of the eggshell, the eggshell cuticle, is an organic layer of variable thickness composed of polysaccharides, hydroxyapatite crystals, lipids and glycoprotein.

ECTOPARASITES FROM ANSERIFORM BIRDS IN MANITOBA

A total of 107 birds were examined of which 78 were positive and 29 were negative. Eight species of ectoparasites were identified from 11 species of birds. During the period 1945-1962, percentage deaths of anserine birds (ducks, geese and swans) did not vary remarkably from year to year even though the population has more than quadrupled during the same period. The number of deaths with amyloidosis has increased significantly even though the death rate did not change.
