Comparative Genomics Reveals Genetic Adaptations to Diving-Associated Foraging in Anseriformes. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We conducted a comparative genomic analysis of 25 Anseriformes species with diverse foraging strategies to uncover the genetic basis of diving adaptation. Diving waterfowl exhibited signatures of positive selection and functional enrichment in metabolic regulation, transmembrane transport, and neural processes essential for hypoxia tolerance.

Fit for purpose? Analysis of the relationship between skull, beak shape and feeding ecology in Psittaciformes. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anat
Psittaciformes exhibit high levels of morphological diversity, particularly in skull and beak structure, previously linked to diet and body size. Although there were some levels of significance between diet and beak shape, body mass was a much stronger co‐variate. Diet is not determining beak shape within the clade.

A comprehensive survey of Rhinonyssid mites (Mesostigmata: Rhinonyssidae) in Northwest Russia: New mite-host associations and prevalence data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Background: Rhinonyssid mites are permanent parasites of birds that inhabit their respiratory tract. There are around 600 species described worldwide and almost all species of birds are found to have embedded rhinonyssid mites.

Ecological Factors Driving Avian Influenza Virus Dynamics in Spanish Wetland Ecosystems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Studies exploring the ecological interactions between avian influenza viruses (AIV), natural hosts and the environment are scarce. Most work has focused on viral survival and transmission under laboratory conditions and through mathematical modelling ...

Comparison of the Chromosome Structures between the Chicken and Three Anserid Species, the Domestic Duck (Anas platyrhynchos), Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata), and Chinese Goose (Anser cygnoides), and the Delineation of their Karyotype Evolution by Comparative Chromosome Mapping

open access: yesThe Journal of Poultry Science, 2014
To better understand the process of karyotype evolution in Galloanserae (Galliformes and Anseriformes), we performed comparative chromosome painting with chicken chromosome-specific DNA probes and FISH mapping of the 18S-28S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes ...

Can sexual selection drive female life histories? A comparative study on Galliform birds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Sexual selection is an important driver of many of the most spectacular morphological traits that we find in the animal kingdom (for example see Andersson, 1994). As such, sexual selection is most often emphasized as
