Forel's estimate of a maximum of half a million to a hill was not supported by Yung's actual enumerations (1900) which showed that of five hills of Formica rufa only one approximated one hundred thousand ants, the other four being well below that number.

In the ANTS (Ants Nearby Treasure Search) problem, multiple searchers, starting from a central location, search for a treasure. The searchers cannot communicate and have few bits of initial knowledge, called advice, when they begin the search. In this paper, we initiate the study of ANTS in the geometric plane.

The question of routing loop formation is examined for a class of routing schemes based on "agents" or "ants". First the notion of loop existence is discussed for the general case of routing tables with multiple, weighted entries. A simple criterion is then found which ensures loop-free routing.
