Ants Exploiting Ants

1987
Perhaps the most sophisticated tools for dissecting the social structure of ants are those ants that exploit other ants. These exploiters range from ants that merely rob others to those that use common trail systems, while yet more devious forms share both the nests and the food supply of their hosts.

On Recalling Ant

The Sociological Review, 1998
The paper explores one after the other the four difficulties of actor-network theory, that is the words ‘actor’, ‘network’ and ‘theory’—without forgetting the hyphen. It tries to refocus the originality of what is more a method to deploy the actor's own world building activities than an alternative social theory.

The Fuzzy Ant

2006 IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, 2006
The design of artificial systems inspired by biological behavior is recently attracting considerable interest. Many biological agents such as plants or animals were forced to develop sophisticated mechanisms in order to tackle various problems they encounter in their habitat.

Ants ordering ants to feed

Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 2002
In a recent paper, M. Beekman and co-workers carried out experimental and theoretical investigations into the behaviour of a biological system consisting of a colony of Pharaoh's ants. By manipulating the colony, the foraging behaviour of the ants was, remarkably, shown to be capable of undergoing a transition between a disordered and an ordered state ...

Stinging ants

Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2001
Ants belong to the order Hymenoptera, along with bees, wasps, yellow jackets, etc., they are the most successful animal genera in this world. It is their selfless social structure which accounts for their huge impact. Their effect on man ranges from the parasol ant, which makes plant cultivation untenable in certain parts of South America, to ...

Ants and Loops

2002
The question of routing loop formation is examined for a class of routing schemes based on "agents" or "ants". First the notion of loop existence is discussed for the general case of routing tables with multiple, weighted entries. A simple criterion is then found which ensures loop-free routing.

The Numbers of Ants in Ant Colonies

Annals of the Entomological Society of America, 1942
The number of ants in an ant hill is a question of perennial interest. Forel's estimate of a maximum of half a million to a hill was not supported by Yung's actual enumerations (1900) which showed that of five hills of Formica rufa only one approximated one hundred thousand ants, the other four being well below that number.

Ants in the Pants

ACM SIGGRAPH 2008 new tech demos, 2008
Nobody likes to imagine that insects are crawling over them. Many of us would become horrified to realize that a feeling ticklishness on the skin was caused by insects. However, many of us have had the experience of playing with ants when we were children.

ANTS on a Plane

2020
In the ANTS (Ants Nearby Treasure Search) problem, multiple searchers, starting from a central location, search for a treasure. The searchers cannot communicate and have few bits of initial knowledge, called advice, when they begin the search. In this paper, we initiate the study of ANTS in the geometric plane.
