Evolution of the Transantarctic Basin (Southern Gondwana): Insights From Quantitative Sandstone Petrography

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 1, March 2026.
The deposition of the sandstone sedimentary succession of the Beacon Supergroup lasted more than 200 Myr (Devonian to Early Jurassic) in Victoria Land and nearby territories in the so‐called Transantarctic Basin, recording crucial events in the history of the Earth.

Seismic Stratigraphy of Eocene–Recent Mixed Depositional Systems on the SE New Zealand Continental Margin, Great South Basin

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 1, March 2026.
The continental margin of SE New Zealand is strongly influenced by the Southland Current and associated water masses. This new seismic stratigraphic study of the margin has revealed a range of depositional mounds and erosional channels that document the close interaction of turbidity and bottom currents in shaping the margin from the Mid‐Eocene onward.

Quantifying the Relative Impact of Atmospheric Variables and Polynya Dynamics on Fast Ice in Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 1, March 2026.
Antarctic fast ice in Terra Nova Bay is crucial for regional climate, ecosystems, and scientific logistics but has recently shown unprecedented decline, impacting operations at Jang Bogo Station. Despite its significance, there remains limited predictive understanding of Antarctic fast ice dynamics, especially regarding thickness and stability, with ...

Spatial Resolution Impact Assessment for Long‐Term Population Monitoring of Adélie Penguin Guano

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 1, March 2026.
Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) are key indicators of the Antarctic ecosystem, and remotely sensed guano stains offer an efficient means of estimating breeding abundance. Landsat medium‐resolution (MR) imagery enables long‐term monitoring through its archive.

Initiation of the Ferrar Large Igneous Province Started in Southern North Victoria Land, Antarctica, With Shallow Emplacement of Sills Causing Magma‐Soft‐Rock Interaction and Phreatomagmatic Eruptions

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 1, March 2026.
Early Jurassic volcanism was in the southern north Victoria Land portion of the Ferrar Large Igneous Province preceded by multiple phases of shallow‐level intrusions of Ferrar sills into the 300 m thick cover of sedimentary rocks of the Triassic‐Jurassic Victoria Group.
