Polyunsaturated fatty acids in Antarctic bacteria

Antarctic Science, 1993
Thirty eight strains of Antarctic bacteria were screened for the ability to produce polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Five strains contained eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5ω3) in the range of trace to 3.3% of total fatty acids, and up to 1.4 mg g-1 dry weight.

Demonstration of antifreeze protein activity in Antarctic lake bacteria

Microbiology, 2004
Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are a structurally diverse group of proteins that have the ability to modify ice crystal structure and inhibit recrystallization of ice. AFPs are well characterized in fish and insects, but very few bacterial species have been shown to have AFP activity to date.

Agar-degrading bacteria isolated from Antarctic macroalgae

Folia Microbiologica, 2017
This study describes the taxonomic diversity of pigmented, agar-degrading bacteria isolated from the surface of macroalgae collected in King George Island, Antarctica. A total of 30 pigmented, agarolytic bacteria were isolated from the surface of the Antarctic macroalgae Adenocystis utricularis, Monostroma hariotii, Iridaea cordata, and Pantoneura ...

Activity of Antarctic fungi extracts against phytopathogenic bacteria

Letters in Applied Microbiology, 2018
This study aims to obtain secondary metabolites extracts from filamentous fungi isolated from soil and marine sediments from Antarctic ecosystems and to assess its potential antibacterial activity on Xanthomonas euvesicatoria and Xanthomonas axonopodis pv.

Exopolysaccharide production by Antarctic marine bacteria

2005
Antarctic marine bacteria isolated from sea ice and Southern Ocean particulate material were screened for exopolysaccharide (EPS) production. Ten strains were characterized using phenotypic (morphology), chemotaxonomic (whole cell fatty acid profiles) and phylogenetic (16S rDNA sequencing) techniques.

Recombinant Protein Production in Antarctic Gram-Negative Bacteria

2004
This review reports some results from our laboratory on the setting up of a psychrophilic expression system for the homologous/heterologous protein production in cold-adapted bacteria by using natural plasmids as cloning vectors. By screening some Antarctic bacteria for the presence of extrachromosomal elements, we identified three new plasmids, pMtBL ...

Effect of Antarctic solar radiation on sewage bacteria viability

Water Research, 2005
The majority of coastal Antarctic research stations discard untreated sewage waste into the near-shore marine environment. However, Antarctic solar conditions are unique, with ozone depletion increasing the proportion of potentially damaging ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation reaching the marine environment.
