Diversity, Distribution, and Ecology of Fungi in the Seasonal Snow of Antarctica
We characterized the fungal community found in the winter seasonal snow of the Antarctic Peninsula. From the samples of snow, 234 fungal isolates were obtained and could be assigned to 51 taxa of 26 genera.

Metagenomic analysis of a a southern maritime Antarctic soil [PDF]
Our current understanding of Antarctic soils is derived from direct culture on selective media, biodiversity studies based on clone library construction and analysis, quantitative PCR amplification of specific gene sequences and the application of ...

Identifying appropriate sampling and modelling approaches for analysing distributional patterns of Antarctic terrestrial arthropods along the Victoria Land latitudinal gradient [PDF]
Biotic communities in Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems are relatively simple and often lack higher trophic levels (e. g. predators); thus, it is often assumed that species' distributions are mainly affected by abiotic factors such as climatic conditions,

The present authors reviewed the history of research and contributions in Antarctic mycology. Beginning with the first original study by EKELOF (1907, 1908) on the molds from the soil at Snow Hill Island, east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula (material ...

In the harshest environmental conditions of the Antarctic desert, normally incompatible with active life, microbes are adapted to exploit the cryptoendolithic habitat (i.e., pore spaces of rocks) and represent the predominant life-forms.

Bioactivity Screening of Marine and Terrestrial Derived Fungi From Antarctica
The Antarctic region is situated in the Southern Hemisphere. The weather in Antarctica can often change dramatically in a short span of time. Due to these sudden changes the organisms and microorganisms which live in Antarctica produce unique metabolites

To survive in Antarctica, early explorers of Antarctica's Heroic Age erected wooden buildings and brought in large quantities of supplies. The introduction of wood and other organic materials may have provided new nutrient sources for fungi that were ...

Resolving environmental drivers of microbial community structure in Antarctic soils
Antarctic soils are extremely cold, dry, and oligotrophic, yet harbour surprisingly high bacterial diversity. The severity of environmental conditions has constrained the development of multi-trophic communities, and species richness and distribution is ...
