Ambient high-frequency seismic surface waves in the firn column of central west Antarctica
Firn is the pervasive surface material across Antarctica, and its structures reflect its formation and history in response to environmental perturbations.

A major consideration for maritime activity in the Southern Hemisphere is the northern limit of icebergs, or the Southern Ocean Limit Of Known Ice (SOLOKI).

Glacial environments exhibit temporally variable microseismicity. To investigate how microseismicity influences event detection, we implement two noise-adaptive digital power detectors to process seismic data from Taylor Glacier, Antarctica.

The 1789 Christmas Eve collision of the HMS Guardian with an iceberg in the southwest Indian Ocean
In the evening of 24 December 1789, 2100 km southeast of Cape Town and after encountering three icebergs, the HMS Guardian under Captain Edward Riou collided with the submerged foot of a large iceberg.

Progress toward globally complete frontal ablation estimates of marine-terminating glaciers
Knowledge of frontal ablation from marine-terminating glaciers (i.e., mass lost at the calving face) is critical for constraining glacier mass balance, improving projections of mass change, and identifying the processes that govern frontal mass loss ...

Coupling the U.K. Earth System Model to Dynamic Models of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets
The physical interactions between ice sheets and the atmosphere and ocean around them are major factors in determining the state of the climate system, yet many current Earth System models omit them entirely or treat them very simply.

Contributions to the Glaciology of the Antarctic [PDF]
AbstractDuring a winter in Terre Adélie in 1951 (Antarctica) certain glaciological studies were made. These were strongly hampered by the extraordinary strength and persistence of the blizzards from the ice cap. Near the coast the wind dominates the distribution of snow completely. The firn limit on the open ice cap is at a height of 450 m. (1500 ft.).

Geographical distribution and volume of Antarctic icebergs derived from ship observation data
Information on the occurrence, spatial distribution and morphometric characteristics of Antarctic icebergs is needed in a large number of applications including navigation, heat and freshwater balance calculations, biochemistry of the ocean and ...

Physical and biological properties of early winter Antarctic sea ice in the Ross Sea
This work presents the results of physical and biological investigations at 27 biogeochemical stations of early winter sea ice in the Ross Sea during the 2017 PIPERS cruise. Only two similar cruises occurred in the past, in 1995 and 1998.

Basal freeze-on generates complex ice-sheet stratigraphy
Subsurface ice-sheet radar images reveal large plume-shaped bodies rising from the base, with their origin not yet understood. Here, the authors show that freeze-on of water at the ice-sheet base combined with ice-flux explains the vertical extent, shape
