Microplastic contamination in east Antarctic sea ice

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2020
The durability of plastics in the marine environment has led to concerns regarding the pervasiveness of this debris in remote polar habitats. Microplastic (MP) enrichment in East Antarctic sea ice was measured in one ice core sampled from coastal land-fast sea ice.

The Antarctic Sea Ice Cover

1994
The sea ice cover in the Antarctic is one of the most climatically important features of the Southern Hemisphere. Its seasonal variation in extent is from 4 million km2 in summer (February) to 20 million km2 in winter (September) (Zwally et al. 1983).

Acoustic reflectivity of Antarctic sea ice

'Challenges of Our Changing Global Environment'. Conference Proceedings. OCEANS '95 MTS/IEEE, 2002
An Upward Looking Sonar (ULS) operating at 300 kHz has been built and deployed off the Antarctic coast during 1994 as part of the Australian climate related sea ice research program. The ULS was moored 150 m below the surface in water of 3 km depth and returned data spanning 11 months.

Ciliates from Antarctic sea ice

Polar Biology, 2000
Five ciliates, Chlamydonella prostomata nov. sp., Paractedoctema acruosa nov. gen., nov. sp., Urocyclon ovatum nov. gen., nov. sp., Porpostoma grassei (Corliss and Snyder 1986) and Cytharoides balechi Tuffrau 1974, collected from sea ice in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica were morphologically and taxonomically investigated.

Fracture of Antarctic FY Sea Ice

2008
The break-up of sea ice in McMurdo Sound has been investigated during two field trips in the fall of 2000 and 2001 via in-situ cyclic loading and fracture experiments. Details regarding the test site, setup and methods used in the in-situ experiments have been reported [1],[2].

Diffusion of Light in Antarctic Sea Ice

MRS Proceedings, 1990
ABSTRACTIt is important to understand the diffusion sun light in sea ice as this interaction exerts a strong influence over the weather in polar regions and over the growth of microbial communities in the sub-ice water column. Sea ice is a granular composite of ice, brine, air and at low temperatures precipitated salts, in which the proportion and ...

Optical studies of Antarctic sea ice

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 1988
Abstract During the austral winter 1986 the spectral albedo of both snow-covered and bare sea ice was measured over the wavelength range 400–1350 nm in the eastern Weddell Sea. The albedo shows high values and a week wave-length dependence in the visible part of the spectrum and a strong decrease with increasing wavelength in the near IR.

Perscribing Antarctic landfast sea ice in a sea ice-ocean model.

The coastal polynyas of the Southern Ocean play a crucial role in the formation of dense water and have an impact on the stability of ice shelves. Therefore, it is important to accurately simulate them in climate models. To achieve this goal, the relationship between grounded icebergs, landfast ice and polynyas appears to be central.
