Fifty years of Bryology in Mexico

open access: yesBotan‪ical Sciences, 2021
Background: Mexican botanists were not involved in bryophyte research fifty years ago; only four small floristic contributions were published between 1942-1958. Questions: What has been learned in the last fifty years?

Lack of conservation of bacterial type promoters in plastids of Streptophyta [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We demonstrate the scarcity of conserved bacterial-type promoters in plastids of Streptophyta and report widely conserved promoters only for genes psaA, psbA, psbB, psbE, rbcL.

Modern Use of Bryophytes as a Source of Secondary Metabolites

open access: yesAgronomy, 2022
Bryophytes constitute a heterogeneous group of plants which includes three clades: approximately 14,000 species of mosses (Bryophyta), 6000 species of liverworts (Marchantiophyta), and 300 species of hornworts (Anthocerotophyta).

Recently resurrected for European liverwort flora – Frullania calcarifera Steph., new addition for the Crimean Peninsula [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Frullania calcarifera is a long forgotten taxon, which originally has been described by F. Stephani in 1887 from Portugal, but largely overlooked since that time due to its synonymization with F. tamarisci s.str. Based on both molecular and morphological

The sporophyte–gametophyte junction in the hornwort, Dendroceros tubercularis Hatt (Anthocerotophyta) [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 1990
SUMMARYThe placenta of the anthocerote, Dendroceros tubercularis Hatt., consists of long and branched haustorial cells, that arise from the foot and gametophyte transfer cells. Both cell types contain electron‐dense vacuolar deposits that were digested by pronase and therefore are assumed to be protein.

Exceptional endemicity of Aotearoa New Zealand biota shows how taxa dispersal traits, but not phylogeny, correlate with global species richness. [PDF]

open access: yesJ R Soc N Z
ABSTRACT Species’ with more limited dispersal and consequently less gene flow are more likely to form new spatially segregated species and thus contribute disproportionally to endemic biota and global species richness. Aotearoa New Zealand has exceptional endemicity, with 52% of its 54,000 named species endemic, including 32%, 39% and 68% for ...
