Spermatogenesis in anthozoa: Differentiation of the spermatid
Cell And Tissue Research, 1975The fine structure of spermatids has been examined in Calliactis, Protanthea, Gonactinia and Parazoanthus (Cnidaria, Anthozoa). The sperm cells are relatively simple and lack distinct acrosomes. Their nuclei, spherical in the zoanthid, in the actinians are slendertipped cones. Condensation of the chromatin is interpreted in terms of progressive coiling

Systematic Relationships within the Anthozoa (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) Using the 5′-end of the 28S rDNA
Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 1995Systematic relationships among the subclasses of Anthozoa, and especially among the orders Scleractinia, Actiniaria, and Corallimorpharia of subclass Zoantharia, were investigated by applying parsimony and distance methods of analysis to nucleotide sequence data obtained for the 5' end of the 28S rDNA.

Sea Anemone (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Actiniaria) Toxins: An Overview [PDF]
The Cnidaria phylum includes organisms that are among the most venomous animals. The Anthozoa class includes sea anemones, hard corals, soft corals and sea pens. The composition of cnidarian venoms is not known in detail, but they appear to contain a variety of compounds. Currently around 250 of those compounds have been identified (peptides, proteins,

The association between anemonefish and anemone is a classical example of mutualism in coral reefs. Although mutualism is probably the key innovation that triggered the adaptive radiation of anemonefish into a wide range of habitats, the coevolutionary ...

Anthozoa red fluorescent protein in biosensing
Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, 2006The identification and cloning of a red fluorescent protein (DsRed) obtained from Anthozoa corals has provided an alternative to commonly used green fluorescent proteins (GFPs) in bioanalytical and biomedical research. DsRed in tandem with GFPs has enhanced the feasibility of multicolor labeling studies.

Generation of bilateral symmetry in Anthozoa: A model
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2007Polyps of Anthozoa usually display bilateral symmetry with respect to their mouth opening, to their pharynx, and in particular to the arrangement of their mesenteries. Mesenteries, which are endodermal folds running from the apical to the basal end of the body, subdivide the gastric cavity into pouches. They form in a bilateral symmetric sequence.

Reproduction in Zoanthidea (Anthozoa: Hexacorallia)
Invertebrate Reproduction & Development, 1997Summary The state of knowledge concerning the reproductive biology of zoanthids is reviewed. Colonies in the suborder Macrocnemina, with few exceptions, are gonochoric; those in Brachycnemina are probably basically hermaphroditic but accurate sampling in colonies that fragment is difficult and exceptions by species or populations occur.
